Me and Music
Hey there! My name is Mathew Gita, but I prefer to go by just Gita because it's unique to my tribe, and it also sounds like my favorite instrument, the guitar. I was born in 2002 in a place called Koboko, Uganda, but I’m South Sudanese by nationality.
I come from a family of five—four boys and one girl—and I’m the youngest. All of us love music, and though it wasn’t something we picked up from anywhere specific, we likely inherited it from our parents.
I was told that my mom used to write songs for her mother's union group whenever they had a guest at their church. As for my dad, he was such a music lover that he bought one of those double-deck tape radio players and a box of cassette tapes back in 2000.
Music became a constant in our home, bringing joy to all of us. Everyone in my family either sings or writes music. My older brother, Barnabas Samuel, started making music and even released an album along with several singles. My sister, Selua Lula, is a backup artist and writes songs for events where she used to work. Another brother, Jaiksana, is a rapper and has released a couple of songs. Then there’s Ronald, also known as Taylor Beats, who is a music producer and dabbles in writing and singing. And finally, you have me—Gita.
I love singing, and I do karaoke every day. I hum to melodies, whether they belong to other people or are original tunes that haven’t been written down yet. This inspires me to write songs, although I used to feel like I wasn’t good enough. My brothers reassured me that it’s not about being "good enough"—it’s about expressing myself in the best way I can.
My approach to songwriting is unique. I can be inspired by someone else’s song and turn that into something of my own, but I also write from what I observe happening around me.
Right now, I’m working on an EP (Extended Play) called Play-Gita, which includes five tracks. These songs reflect the different approaches I take in my songwriting, and I hope they will bless you.
